Odysseus and his crew land on the island of the Cyclopes. The encounter with Polyphemus, son of Poseidon, will define Odysseus's pride — and curse his journey for years to come.

Aeolus, keeper of the winds, welcomes Odysseus and gives him a bag of winds to sail home — only for the crew's greed to undo everything when they are within sight of Ithaca.

  The hospitable god of winds welcomes Odysseus warmly. A deceptively warm, gentle song about hospitality and gifts — the bag of winds is presented as a generous solution. The warmth makes what follows more painful. Aeolus's generosity becomes cruelty when it all falls apart.

  Odysseus + Crew

  The crew opens the bag of winds while Odysseus sleeps, thinking it holds treasure. The winds scatter the ships back to square one — Ithaca visible on the horizon, then gone. A song of helpless rage and accumulated misfortune. Odysseus's exhaustion and barely-contained despair are palpable.

The sorceress Circe turns half the crew into pigs — until Odysseus, protected by Hermes, confronts her. A year spent on her island. A relationship that complicates everything. A departure that costs one man his life.

  Circe's villain introduction — a gloriously theatrical declaration of power. She controls men, transforms them, rules her island absolutely.   Odysseus confronts what he has become — or what others see in him. Having spent a year with Circe, he questions whether survival has stripped him of his humanity. The "monster" is not Circe but the version of himself shaped by war, loss, and ruthlessness. One of the musical's most searching, uncomfortable songs.

  Eurylochus

  Eurylochus — the dissenting crewman — gets his farewell. He refuses to enter the Underworld and accepts his fate. The song adds weight to a minor character and reminds us that every name in Odysseus's crew is a person with fear, doubt, and love. A quiet devastation before the grand Underworld sequence.

The final voyage of Odysseus's crew — past the twin terrors of Scylla and Charybdis, and toward the forbidden cattle of Helios. Only Odysseus will survive what comes next.

  Circe's warning about what lies ahead. Odysseus prepares his men for Scylla and Charybdis. The bond of the crew — what remains of it — is the emotional core. The title carries double meaning: hold those you love close, because you may lose them.

  Odysseus + Crew

  Momentum, adrenaline, the desperate push through monsters and sea. Scylla takes men — Odysseus can't stop it, can only keep moving. The guilt of choosing speed over rescue, of losing men he could not save. Propulsive and anguished simultaneously.

  Fly

  Odysseus + Remaining Crew

  The crew slaughters the cattle of Helios — despite Odysseus's warnings — and Helios demands Zeus destroy them. Odysseus alone survives. "Fly" captures the moment the last of his men are swallowed by the sea, leaving him entirely, terribly alone. The end of a crew. The end of a chapter.

The longest, most ambitious saga. Odysseus descends to Hades to consult the prophet Tiresias — and encounters every ghost that haunts him. His mother. His men. His past. The Underworld is a chamber of every loss he has ever suffered.

  Arrival in the realm of the dead. Hades and Persephone welcome (or tolerate) Odysseus. The atmosphere shifts completely — ethereal, solemn, vast. The rulers of the dead are not monsters but cosmic presences. Establishes the Underworld as a place of truth rather than terror.

  Odysseus + Anticlea (his mother)

  Odysseus finds his mother's ghost — and learns she died of grief waiting for him. She cannot be embraced; shades have no physical form. The tragedy of arms reaching through nothing. Perhaps the most emotionally devastating song in the musical. "No longer you" — she is only the idea of who she was.

  Tiresias + Odysseus

  The prophet Tiresias delivers his prophecy — and offers Odysseus a choice. The blind seer sees everything: Poseidon's rage, the suitors, the cattle, and the impossible path home. "There are other ways" is both prophecy and challenge: find another way to be, another way to lead.

  A breathtaking interlude — Achilles and Patroclus reunited in death. Among the greatest heroes now ghosts, these two are simply in love, and that love is enough. Bittersweet perfection. A reminder that even after glory and tragedy, love endures. The most tender moment in the show.

  The Sirens' call rendered as seduction and oblivion — stay here, stop struggling, rest in death. The song is gorgeous precisely because the offer is tempting. Odysseus choosing to resist is not easy; it costs something. The beauty of the song IS the danger.

  Agamemnon's Ghost

  Agamemnon warns Odysseus about women and treachery — bitter, misogynistic advice from a murdered king. The song humanizes a cautionary figure while also critiquing him. His obsession with betrayal reflects his own guilt. A layered, uncomfortable portrait of a man broken by his own choices.

  Ajax's Ghost + Odysseus

  Ajax — who lost the contest for Achilles' armor to Odysseus's rhetoric — refuses to speak. His silent rage is its own condemnation. Odysseus's cleverness cost Ajax his sanity and his life. The song is an accusation without words: Odysseus's greatest weapon is also his greatest weapon against others.

  Odysseus + Ensemble (Underworld)

  The closing of the Underworld sequence. Odysseus has received what he came for and more than he wanted. He rises back toward the living world carrying every ghost with him. The Underworld doesn't end — it travels with him. "Done for" means finished with the Underworld; it also means something else entirely.

Washed ashore alone, Odysseus is held for seven years by the nymph Calypso, who loves him and offers immortality. He refuses — to be mortal and free is worth more than eternal paradise without Penelope.

  Calypso + Odysseus

  Calypso's declaration of love — genuine and suffocating. She offers everything: immortality, beauty, paradise. But Odysseus cannot truly choose her because he has never been free to leave. The song's tenderness and its prison are inseparable. Calypso loves him; that love is also his cage.

  Scylla (Reprise)

  Odysseus

  As Odysseus finally departs Ogygia, the memory of Scylla — of lost men — returns. He carries all his losses even into his freedom. The reprise deepens the original: survival is not the same as living without cost.

Washed ashore at Phaeacia, Odysseus meets the princess Nausicaa and is welcomed by King Alcinous — who asks him to tell his story. The entire musical has been Odysseus's recounting to the Phaeacians.

  Poseidon + Odysseus

  Poseidon's final assault on Odysseus — a storm to destroy him before he reaches land. The god's rage and Odysseus's desperate survival. The conflict that has defined the entire journey reaches its physical peak here. Odysseus clings to a raft as divine fury batters him.

  King of Phaeacia

  Alcinous + Nausicaa + Odysseus

  Arrival and welcome at the court of Alcinous. Phaeacia is a prosperous, peaceful kingdom — a kind of pre-Ithaca paradise. Alcinous and his daughter are genuine in their hospitality. The contrast with Ithaca's crisis makes Odysseus's choice to continue more poignant.

  Odysseus

  At the court feast, Odysseus hears a bard sing of Troy — and reveals himself. This transitions into the frame narrative: the entire musical has been Odysseus's story told to the Phaeacians. Meta-theatrical and deeply moving. The storyteller is the hero; the hero is only human.

The homecoming — disguised, dangerous, and bittersweet. Suitors have taken over the palace and compete for Penelope. Telemachus has grown up without his father. The bow that only Odysseus can string awaits. And Penelope has been waiting twenty years.

  The song the musical has been building to — Penelope finally speaks. Her twenty years of waiting, weaving and unweaving the shroud, maintaining hope while grieving. Penelope is not a passive wife; she is a strategist equal to Odysseus. Her song is the emotional counterweight to every saga before it.

  Odysseus + Telemachus

  Father and son reunited — then immediately forced to fight together. The slaughter of the suitors. Brutal and cathartic, it is also a portrait of a boy who became a man and a man who became a father again in the space of one night. Twenty years of separation resolved in blood and reunion.

  Just a Man (Reprise)

  Odysseus + Penelope

  The closing reprise returns to the beginning — Odysseus's opening declaration now answered by Penelope's recognition. He is just a man. She is just a woman. And that is everything. The simplicity after the epic journey is the point. Not glory — just two people, home at last. The most earned ending in musical theater.
